When Paxton was born, the umbilical cord was around his neck very, very tightly 3 times. Because of this, he was very blue and bruised at birth. His Apgar score was 9 .... he was very alert.... and taking a bottle within hours of being born. During the night Friday night, Selena noticed his rapid respiratory rate in the well nursery. By 10:00 Saturday morning, his breathing was extremely labored and fast. I called the well nursery nurse and she came to get Paxton. Within a short time, he was admitted to the NICU. After x-rays and tests, it was discovered he had Respiratory Distress Syndrome and a Pneumothorax, which is an air pocket between his chest wall and right lung. The pneumothorax was completely gone by Sunday night, but he is currently still in the NICU because of the RDS. We are hoping he will be home with us very, very soon!
